In Ruth Laner’s account, her entry into working life as an employee of the Dornbirn Savings Bank seems like a distant memory:
The Austrian Schilling was still in circulation, there was no talk of the Euro, and deposits and withdrawals were typed into savings books on a typewriter. The introduction of debit cards seemed just as far off as female bank customers, who were still a rarity at the time. On the other hand, dealing with foreign currency was part of everyday business—especially in Lustenau, the center of lace exports to Africa.
