Bibliothekar Norbert Schnetzer – Ein Leben zwischen alten Büchern und neuen Zeiten
Norbert Schnetzer has been working at the Vorarlberg State Library since 1993 – and during that time he has experienced just about everything a librarian can experience: the transition from the card catalogue to the digital catalogue, the development of VOLARE, the Vorarlberg State Repository with around two million photographs, and the digitization of historic newspapers that suddenly became searchable at the touch of a button. And yet, time and again, it is the old books that draw him back.
For Schnetzer’s true passion lies in the library’s oldest treasures – from manuscripts featuring hand-painted views of aristocratic residences to early printed books produced in Vorarlberg as early as 1616. These are books he has spent more than three decades studying, researching, and, quite simply, falling in love with.
In the 14th edition of the Museum of Change, he explains why he still enjoys going to the library every morning, what a watermark can reveal about the age of a book, and why he is convinced that the printed book will never disappear.
